was hoping you could give reasons why you do not want your hosting co. to also do your website and or marketing

hosting company DOES my marketing
But not my website design.
Tried them. I simply will not put up with a 25-year-old mentality trying to reinterpret my inn! It wasn't me! Or my market! And particularly the proposed resdesign was very unrestful! Wow, what we sell is peace, quiet and rest!

I use a local person who used to be with a Seattle dot com until the crash. The he was home with "dad" in my town. Now he's the tech writer for all the TVA operations on a 2-year contract. HE knows HTML and all that stuff. I know what I want it to look like (my dad owned a sign co. my grandfather was a sign painter and artist; my mom was an artist. I worked for newspapers and magazines--very graphic stuff). So I know my look and REQUIRE it. We do get compliments on the site although those who hate my site obviously don't come stay with me! Hard to know!
I'm big on making YOUR voice the voice on the page. I'm now working on www.heritagehalltheatre.org. Have not looked at the place holder page. But we will try to incorporate the aspirations of those who renovated it with the need to rent it. And TRY for a younger "voice" when it comes to selling events (they have something similar to Webervations for theaters). As the visual designer of this page it will NOT be my voice you read, but that of the people who breathed life back into it. (mothballed for decades).
If you don't get a satisfactory result from a designer, go find someone else. And if you have no talent yourself, get someone who SEES you and your inn clearly and interprets YOU correctly.
No point in having a site if it doesn't do the job.
And for heaven's sake, don't let them take a cookie cutter approach.
